Buckland & Taylor provides specialized bridge engineering services to clients worldwide from its head office in North Vancouver, BC, Canada, its offices in Edmonton, AB and Halifax NS, Canada and from its US offices in Seattle, WA, Oakland, CA and New York City, NY. Founded in 1972 with a goal of providing the highest standard of bridge engineering, the Company is now recognized throughout North America and internationally as a leader in the design, evaluation, rehabilitation and construction engineering of bridges of all types and all sizes. Company Profile We specialize in design (particularly design for design-build), independent checking, evaluation, retrofit, rehabilitation, and construction engineering for bridges of all types. Our work is almost evenly split between bridge owners and bridge contractors. Such a mix keeps our designers on top of current construction techniques, which in turn leads to more constructible designs that are sensitive to the requirements of the Contractor, Owner, and Owner's Engineer. The company employs approximately 135 full-time bridge engineers and 15 drafters who have been involved in some of the world's most challenging and prestigious bridge projects including the Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong, Rama 8 Bridge in Bangkok, the Rion Antirion Bridge in Greece, and the Lions' Gate Bridge in British Columbia. Our company offers a broad base of experience in all aspects of bridge engineering. Buckland & Taylor and our sister companies, Ben C. Gerwick, Inc., Ocean and Coastal Consultants, Inc. and Flint and Neill Limited, are members of the COWI Group. World Firsts Since the company was founded in 1972, we have worked on many world firsts. One example is Vancouver’s Lions’ Gate Bridge on which our work dates from the inception of the firm. In 1975, the concrete roadway deck on the approach viaduct was replaced by a wider, lighter orthotropic steel deck during short night time closures. This innovative solution was the world’s first. In 2002, the entire suspended structure (deck, sidewalk, trusses and hangers) of the Lions’ Gate Bridge was completely replaced during night time closures – another world first. First replacement of a concrete bridge deck with a steel orthotropic deck during night-time closures (Lions' Gate Bridge North Approach Viaduct, BC, 1975). First use of precast deck panels, first use of long lay cables, first use of steel plate girders for high level cable-stayed bridge (Alex Fraser Bridge, BC, 1985). First use of friction pendulum bearings for earthquake protection (White River, YT, 1997). First extradosed bridge in North America (North Arm Bridge, BC, 2008).
